14 May Achieving Peak Performance by Linking Real-Time Feedback with Proven Solutions to Create an Optimal Experience Culture
Real-time feedback from patients, physicians, nurses, and the caregiver team has identified challenges associated with the transformation of healthcare over the past decade. The journey from fee-for-service to value-based reimbursement, regulatory factors, the electronic medical record, health system mergers, and a shift from independent to employed physician models resulting in loss of autonomy, have led to levels of burnout higher than other non-medicine occupations. The desire for health systems, physicians, nurses, and clinical support teams to deliver optimal outcomes, with safety, efficiency, and an excellent experience for patients and the caregiver team is severely jeopardized when approximately 40% of our caregiver team is experiencing some degree of burnout; burnout is associated with a less than desirable experience culture, increased medical errors, and increased mortality.
With the COVID-19 pandemic upon us, real-time feedback has identified an increase in stressors experienced by medical teams, which will likely have a significant negative impact on burnout. Providing care with limited availability of necessary personal protective equipment, the risk of becoming ill oneself, the experience of witnessing colleagues becoming ill and potentially succumbing to the disease, the feeling of guilt from team members who have had their practices essentially shut down with social distancing, the furloughing of team members, the downward adjustment in salaries, and the significant financial losses expected at the organizational level, all will potentially augment the problem of burnout and jeopardize the experience for patients, families, and the caregiver team.
Meaningful solutions and interventions to nurture an optimal experience culture and simultaneously prevent and treat burnout are essential for healthcare leaders and team members to implement. In addition, moving beyond “zero burnout” to emotional thriving and emotional recovery will allow our individuals and teams to achieve the goals they aspire to deliver.
