Breaking Bad News

The Breaking Bad News course is a four hour module designed to further enhance the learners’ ability to communicate in an effective manner with patients and colleagues when delivering bad or sad news. The course is interactive, featuring introductory materials, videos, small group activities and large group discussions.

The course is offered to physicians, allied healthcare providers and administrative staff of all backgrounds.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

  1. Review communication strategies for breaking bad or sad News
  2. Learn and improve communication skills necessary in End of Life discussions
  3. Identify perceived barriers, supports and changes needed to improve difficult discussions and End Of Life care in the ICU and in the hospital
  4. Become familiar and practice using “SPIKES” as a communication tool in breaking bad or sad news
  5. Explore ways to confront moral distress associated with difficult decisions

This course covers different materials and skills than the Palliative care course and can be used as a complementary module.
